What color should I paint the walls?
Certainly this is the most common question that I get from my clients. And I know that for many of you, all those paint chip samples, sound more like a torture than fun. For that reason, today I want to help you out with some tips on how to choose the color palette to paint a room in your house or office.
That colors act psychologically on us we already know. That is proven in all hospitals over the world painted with a light green color … very calming. However, the color psychology is only one method to use when choosing colors, I particularly prefer to go with another starting point. So, I would like to advise you that instead of running to the paint store, and try to choose one color over all those samples, please listen to what I have to tell you. 😉
Tips on how to choose the right color
#1_ Try to find some inspiration in a fabric that you already have or would like to use on curtains, pillows or beddings. Usually a fabric or patterned upholstery are a great starting point.
#2_ Use existing furniture and decorative items as a guide. You can easily coordinate the walls with those focal point pieces, often bright and vibrant colors go well on small objects or furniture than in a whole wall that can bring an oppressive feeling to the room.
#3_ Consider the room size, or how big you want the room to feel. Dark colors make the room feel smaller and cozy, instead of more light colors, make the room seem larger and brighter.
#4_ Consider the natural lighting in the room. If it receives a low amount of natural light, paint it a light and cool color. But if it does get lots of natural light, consider painting a deeper and richer color.
#5_ Make some tests. Now that you already have a clearer idea on how your color palette will look like, you can run to the paint store and select some options to give it a try. However, consider to paint a slight big area than just a stripe, in this way you will get the chance to “feel” better the color in the room.
